IELTS Speaking Tips for Part Three

1. The questions in part three will be related to the topic in part two. So if you talked about your favorite restaurant as a child in part two. The questions in part three will probably be about restaurants.

2. This part is a discussion, so you can ask the examiner questions if you want. But don’t ask many questions and try to do most of the talking.

3. In part three you will probably have to do one or more of the following:

  • describe something

  • compare two or more things

  • talk about preferences

  • talk about a process

  • give a possible solution

You will also have to give your opinion about several things, and give reasons for you opinions. Make sure you know how to use the correct vocabulary and grammar for: description, comparison, preference, processes, and giving / supporting/justifying opinions.

4. If you need a little time to think you can use expressions like “That’s a good question…” or “Hmmm let me think…”. But don’t pause too long after the expression. And don’t use these expressions often.

Too much to remember?

Whew, that was a lot of IELTS speaking tips. What if you panic and forget all of the advice and training?

That’s okay.

Keep it simple. Listen to the question, answer it, and give details when you can.

That’s the most important advice I can give. Oh, and pretend you are confident, that helps too.
